Star Wars: Squadrons writer Mitch Dyer recently revealed that the game’s character Keo uses “they/them” pronouns.
Dyer took to Twitter to share a screen shot of Keo Venzee and wrote, “Friendly PSA as people start talking about characters…! Keo’s pronouns in Star Wars: Squadrons are they/them. Thank you!”
As detailed by StarWars.com, Keo Venzee is a New Republic fighter pilot and a member of the Vanguard Squadron. The character was born on Mirial and is thus a Mirialan.
Here’s how StarWars.com describes the character. They begin, “The young pilot Keo Venzee was born on Mirial, but felt driven to wander the galaxy. They found fame and fortune on the galactic racing circuit, earning championship trophies but running afoul of the criminal syndicates who control races in the Outer Rim.”
The description continues, “Keo was saved by a kind stranger who opened Keo’s eyes to the struggle between the New Republic and the Galactic Empire. Determined to help, Keo brought their racer’s talents, intuition, and integrity to Vanguard Squadron.”
The announcement that Venzee uses the pronouns “they/them” follows High Republic author Daniel José Older promise that there would be more gender nonbinary Star Wars characters introduced in the future.
Older wrote on Twitter, “Let me say this to international publishers: Taka Jamoreesa was not the first and I can promise you they will not be the last gender nonbinary Star Wars character.”
He added, “So you would do well to figure out how to handle that correctly for translations.”
As for Venzee, the character joins other members of the Vanguard Squadron that includes combat pilot Lindon Javes and squad members Grace Sienar, Kierah “Gunny” Koovah, and Feresek “Frisk” Tssat.
The Vanguard Squadron is supported by the Mon Calamari intelligence chief Ardo Barodai and maintenance crew member Zerelda Sage.
They are opposed by Titan Squadron, which is led by Terisa Kerril and her crew which includes Having Vonreg, Rella Sol, and a character named Shen.
While Kerril leads Titan Squadron, the team is overseen by Admiral Rae Sloane. They are aided by Imperial Information Officer LT-514, and mechanic Willard Waylin.
Star Wars: Squadrons is available to purchase for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
