Arrow’s David Ramsey To Return To The CW In ‘Mystery Role’!

David Ramsey doesn’t seem to be finished with the Arrowverse, as it has been announced that the actor will make a return to the CW both behind the cameras and in front of them, reprising his role as Dig and guest-starring in a new ‘mystery role’ on Legends of Tomorrow.

Ramsey’s return was announced on December 1st by Deadline, with the entertainment news outlet reporting that the actor would “return to direct five episodes in the DC Universe including the new series Superman & Lois, and Supergirl” and “will guest star in five episodes across the Arrowverse, returning as fan favorite John Diggle in Superman & Lois, Supergirl, The Flash and Batwoman, along with a mystery role in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow that is being kept under wraps.”

His direction on Superman & Lois and it’s older sibling, Supergirl, will mark Ramsey’s third and fourth directorial outings, respectively, adding to a budding resume that currently only includes his past work directing the Arrow episodes ‘Past Sins’ (Season 7) and ‘Reset’ (Season 8).

Ramsey shared his awe and excitement towards his chance to continue working in what he calls ‘”the Berlantiverse” – an alternative name for the Arrowverse that references DC producer Greg Berlanti rather than the first series produced in the universe, saying, “I remain in awe of the imprint these shows have had on television and I’ve been blessed for the better part of a decade to be a part of them both in front of and behind the camera.”

“To say I’m excited beyond belief to return to the Berlantiverse would be an understatement. I can’t wait to continue telling these stories,” he added.

However, the most head-turning detail of this announcement is that Ramsey is slated for a “mystery role” on Legends of Tomorrow, a piece of information which has reignited fan hope that he will appear on screen as a Green Lantern, specifically as version of John Stewart.

The trade, refusing to speculate, merely writes that Ramsey’s role is “being kept under wraps,”, which some have taken as a rather telling sign that the character in question is more than a D- or C-lister pulled from DC’s extensive history.

“There has been speculation that Diggle might return at some point as the Green Lantern, ” Deadline noted. “So stay tuned.”

David Ramsey-Diggle in the Arrowverse

Ramsey’s return as a Green Lantern is not out of the realm of possibility, especially considering the rather lengthy and explicit connections made between Diggle, John Stewart, and the Corp over the years.

In the season 7 episode ‘Elsewords, Part 2’, a breach in the multiverse gives members of Team Arrow, Flash, and Supergirl a glimpse into Earth-90, whose Flash, upon meeting the heroes from the Earth-1, comments to John that ““You’re not wearing your ring. Things must be different here.”

Of course the most blatant reference to his future as a Green Lantern came in the Arrow series finale, when Diggle is bathed in a glowing green light upon his discovery and opening of a mysterious alien container.

As for his alter-ego, one of the most prominent parallels between Diggle and Stewart, aside from their shared first name, are how both men are military veterans, with the former having served as a Master Sergeant in the US Army Special Forces and the latter as a sniper in the United States Marine Corps.

This personal parallel between the two was further cemented in the season 7 Arrow episode ‘Spartan’, in which audiences were introduced to Diggle’s stepfather, fellow military veteran Roy Stewart, with some fans even speculating that the Ernie Hudson-portrayed character was an older version of the popular Emerald Knight, though this angle was never officially confirmed.

Given these rather strong hints, Diggle’s membership in the Corps is all but guaranteed to be a lock. After all, if he found the ring and simply left it in a box on a shelf or in a closet while he goes about his daily life, the end of his story would be extraordinarily and uncharacteristically anti-climactic.

Moreover, the idea of Ramsey signing on to direct shows he is guest-starring in without the perk of being a Lantern doesn’t make much sense, especially in the face of his interest in and alleged pitching of a Green Lantern series to the CW, though the economic troubles caused by the COVID-19 pandemic could have the actor seeking any avenue of steady work he can.

This follows a rumor from a year ago a GL series starring Ramsey was pitched, which it looks like he could be moving closer toward,

The chance that Ramsey could appear as John Stewart has sparked further chatter that he’ll play the character in the upcoming HBO Max show, but it’s more likely that Ramsey would play a separate version of Stewart, or at the least a completely different character, in an entirely different continuity with no connection to The CW.

The first season of Superman & Lois is set to premiere in late February, with Supergirl’s sixth and final season, which will feature an appearance by Ramsey, slated to touch down in mid-2021.
