Developer IllFonic announced a brand new Ghostbusters game titled Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed. It’s an asymmetrical multiplayer game where you can bust or be a ghost.

As per IllFonic’s prior titles- such as Friday the 13th: The Game and Predator: Hunting Grounds- and in collaboration with Columbia Pictures and Ghost Corps, players will be able to control either one of four Ghostbusters, or a singular terrifying specter.

Joining the newest Ghostbuster in Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed- and inheriting the job from original member Winston Zeddemore (reprised by Ernie Hudson)- you’ll be armed with a Proton Pack, PKE Meter, and Ghost Trap.

Players must work together to keep citizens calm and prevent the environment from becoming too haunted. Hunt down the ghost, use the Particle Thrower to keep it in place, and close the trap at just the right time.

However, thanks to Ray Stanz (Dan Aykroyd) and Tobin’s Spirit Guide, you can play as the ghosts. Across multiple ghosts to choose from- each with their own abilities- haunt a location, scare the people, and get away Scott-free by flying or using teleportation between rifts.

Possess objects to make sneaking by Ghostbusters a little easier, or resort to slime and summoning ghouls to save yourself in a head-to-head battle.

Between matches, players can customize their Ghostbuster or Ghost at the Firehouse, upgrade their equipment and abilities, and can practice using the Particle Thrower and its modifications. Get your missions from Winston before you head out on your next match.

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed aims to launch Q4 2022 on PC via the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. The game will also support cross-platform multiplayer, AI allies to fill games, and solo offline play as a Ghostbuster or Ghost.

Ghostbusters is one of the most beloved IPs in the world,” stated IllFonic CEO Charles Brungardt via press release, “so we are pulling out all the stops to make something special and accessible to this diverse fanbase. If you’re someone who loves the movies or asymmetrical multiplayer games, this was made for you.”

Additional information that can be gleamed from the trailer includes map locations. These seem to be Alcatraz (a prison turned museum, or something inspired by it), a hotel (judging by the piano, bar, and luggage trolley), and the Metropolitan Museum of Nature & Science.

Aside from Hudson and Aykroyd, other voice actors for Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed have been revealed. Rahul Kohli (Midnight Mass, Scarecrow in Harley Quinn) announced his involvement on Twitter.

“I can finally reveal that I have been secretly working on a new project, #GhostbustersSpiritsUnleashed! I can’t tell you who I’m voicing,” Kouhi teased, “that’s for another time, but you *can* watch the debut trailer right now!”

Another announced voice actor for Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is video game journalist and presenter Greg Miller, announcing his involvement but not his role across Twitter and two podcasts

Miller tweeted, “There’s a new Ghostbusters video game. I’ve played it, I dug it, and I’m a voice *in* it!

While neither confirmed their roles, it seems unlikely they will merely be voicing a few sound clips of otherwise hollow playable characters. Red vs. Blue writer James Willems and his wife  and Armageddon writer Elyse Willems announced they would be writing for the game, suggesting a larger narrative will unfold.
