Marvel Announces Savage Sword of Conan Series
Marvel Comics announced they will be rebooting the Savage Sword of Conan with writer Gerry Duggan and art by Ron Garney. The series will also feature covers by Alex Ross.
This new Conan series will see Conan find himself prisoner to an unsuspecting pirate crew. However, Conan being Conan, he won’t stay prisoner for long. After escaping his imprisonment, Conan will encounter “dark secrets” and more as he follows “an ancient treasure that may prove to be dangerous.”
Artist Ron Garney spoke to Marvel.com about his plans for the upcoming series. He described he will be going for a “bit more rendered grit to reflect Conan’s personality.” He added that with Richard Isanoves on colors they will be “going for a European look with watercolor that enhances that.”
Garney explained what he hopes to achieve with the five-issue miniseries:
“Probably an opportunity for better escapism. Sometimes we humans need that. Less real world attention and more of a journey into imagination is a better catharsis for real world areas of drama. Everyone benefits from it, not just in art but in story, as they tap into our mythological, evolutionary instincts, and it’s a healthy return to form.”
Savage Sword of Conan will also feature variant covers by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles creator Kevin Eastman, Rahzzah, and George Perez.
Savage Sword of Conan joins Marvel’s growing list of Conan titles which includes Conan the Barbarian by writer Jason Aaron and artist Mahmud Asrar.
Marvel regained the Conan license back in January of this year and early artwork commissioned by Marvel indicated there could be a crossover in the works featuring Conan, Thor, and Wolverine.
Savage Sword of Conan #1 goes on sale on February 13, 2019.
