Godzilla vs. Kong Footage Leaked at CCXP Showed the King’s Increased Size

Wonder Woman 1984 took Brazil and Comic Con Experience by storm Sunday but Godzilla and King Kong left their mark too.

Footage of the goliaths’ confrontation in Godzilla vs. Kong was shown in a montage of 2020’s coming attractions from Warner Bros. Pictures. In the clip, the two slug it out on an aircraft carrier big enough to hold them and Kong punches the King of the Monsters.

Said footage leaked to the web but was later pulled. Movie site Mosho tried to tweet some of it but was hit with a copyright claim. See below:

Fortunately, clips remain out there for those who want to find them. Take a gander at one below, blurry as it is:

A few still shots of the clip from CCXP are out there also slipping through the cracks. Have a look:

King Kong’s size in the brief footage is turning heads. As Twitterer Godzilla (2019) comments, “Kong One Big Monky Now.”

But all who saw Kong: Skull Island should have seen this coming after John C. Reilly uttered the line “Kong’s just a baby.” Well, he hit a major growth spurt.

Based on Mosho’s chart above, Kong measured in at 104 ft. in Skull Island. Godzilla’s height in the MonsterVerse is established at around 393 ft. If able to stand eyeball to eyeball with his rival King, Kong gains another 289 ft.

This is the largest either has been in their storied history. In his original incarnation and Peter Jackson’s remake of the same, Kong hovered around 25 ft. He was double that in Dino De Laurentiis’s respective takes on the character.

Their first rumble in Japan (King Kong vs. Godzilla, 1962) put Godzilla at 164 ft. and Kong at 147 ft. Though their biggest heights at the time, they are dwarfed by the new proportions.

Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard (Blair Witch, You’re Next) told IGN an explanation for King Kong’s sudden size increase is something he will deal with:

“That’ll be a challenge we have to deal with. We’re very aware of that issue.”

Michael Dougherty co-wrote the upcoming film and directed Godzilla King of the Monsters. He still views the conflict as a David and Goliath story – Kong being David.

Dougherty said this to Bloody Disgusting, emphasizing Kong’s growth is natural:

“We’re looking at an almost David vs. Goliath situation. Because everyone, the moment you say Godzilla’s going to fight Kong, your first reaction is Kong doesn’t stand a chance. Godzilla’s got his radioactive breath, et cetera, et cetera. But then if you really take the time to look at Kong as a character, it’s like, okay, in Skull Island he was an adolescent, so he was still growing. So who knows how big he is since the 1970s when they first met him?”

He added Kong has the advantage of primate speed, agility, and intelligence:

“Kong is extremely intelligent. As a primate, he’s a tool-user. So he’s got speed, he’s got agility, he might have some good size. And I like a good underdog battle. You know, it’s like watching Rocky go up against Ivan Drago. It seems like it’s unfair but clearly, this means the underdog might have a few surprises.”

Despite an extremely high audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, loads of fan service, and a summer slot, King of the Monsters didn’t impress some critics and was deemed a box-office disappointment.

Godzilla v. Kong was to open in May like its counterpart but was pushed all the way to next November. Fears of reshoots and what they’ll do to the final cut loom.
