Star Wars Fans Want a Sequel to Solo: A Star Wars Story – Launch #MakeSolo2Happen

A number of Star Wars fans are demanding a sequel to Solo: A Star Wars Story be made in either a spin-off TV series or a follow-up film. They have launched their campaign using the #MakeSolo2Happen hashtag.

The campaign appears to have been started by The Resistance Broadcast, who have labeled May 23rd #MakeSolo2Happen Day.

Here’s what a number of fans are saying and why they want a Solo: A Star Wars Story sequel or spin-off TV show.

Solo: A Star Wars Story only grossed $392 million worldwide with $213.7 million coming in domestic sales. While those numbers might seem strong, the production budget for the film is estimated to be $275 million. With the high production budget and the film not even grossing $400 million, it was the first ever Star Wars movie bomb.

There are a number of reasons why the movie failed at the box office. It’s development saw quite a bit of turmoil with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy replacing directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller with Ron Howard citing creative differences. A Media Analyst financial report put the blame on bad marketing noting that lead actor Alden Ehrenreich’s face was not clearly shown in the trailer. They also indicated the trailer was only released just over 100 days before the film’s theatrical release.

One of the biggest explanations we get from the folks at Disney is the fact that the films were coming out too close together. Disney CEO Bob Iger indicated as much in an interview last September,”I made the timing decision, and as I look back, I think the mistake that I made — I take the blame — was a little too much, too fast.” He added, “But I think we’re going to be a little bit more careful about volume and timing. And the buck stops here on that.”

Iger would more recently reject the idea that the franchise is facing fatigue, “No, not at all.”

Other possible reasons for the financial failure of Solo could be due to competition from Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2. However, one of the biggest problems might have been Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Rian Johnson’s Star Wars film divided audiences with many claiming they wouldn’t watch a Star Wars film again.

While a number of fans are trying to get Disney and Lucasfilm to make another Solo film, it’s possible that ship has sailed.

Kennedy recently stated, “You can’t even do what Marvel does, necessarily, where you pick characters and build new franchises around those characters. This needs to evolve differently.”

Business Insider interpreted that as “there won’t be any more character spin-off movies like Solo.” Their interpretation doesn’t really make any sense given Disney is doing a character spin-off television show based on Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor with Alan Tudyk’s K2-SO.

It’s more than likely we won’t be getting a Solo sequel or TV show anytime soon. Disney only has three planned films on the movie schedule following J.J. Abrams’ The Rise of Skywalker. Those films will be helmed by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and early rumors indicate they will take place during The Old Republic.
