HBO Max has another animated series in the works and, based on the grisly hit Harley Quinn, it is one more that will fit the adult cartoon mold. Taking center stage is the show’s breakout Mort of the Month Kite Man and Gotham City’s watering hole for villains.

The bar, Noonan’s (that first appeared in comics in The Demon Annual), also supplies the working title as the comedy is going to be heavily influenced by the classic sitcom Cheers, explained showrunner/show creator Patrick Schumacker at SXSW (via Slash Film).
Announced during a panel called “Reimagining of Iconic Characters for an Adult audience” that was part of the Not Kidding Around: Warner Bros. Animation presentation, Schumacker added the concept involves Kite Man buying the titular hangout and trying to run it. “He tries to run the bar by himself but it doesn’t turn out so easy,” he said.
Schumacker also says there will be cameos by Harley and Kite Man’s former flame Poison Ivy, who aren’t usually far behind. “We have Harley and Ivy appear in the first episode, but after that, we have different goons and villains appearing every episode like Lex Luthor and Bane. It will be kind of like ‘Cheers’ for supervillains,” he continued.
Cheers was a highly rated Emmy-winning TV show that brought Ted Danson, Woody Harrelson, George Wendt, and John Ratzenberger to prominence. It also introduced the world to Kelsey Grammer’s noteworthy Frasier Crane character that had its own measure of success and could be revisited. The NBC series continues to be very influential for decades hence.
Noonan’s sounds like your average episode of Harley Quinn which often has cameos by Gotham rogues and members of the Bat-Family milling about through their own subplots or for some extra idiotic comic relief.
There will be more of all that when Season 3 of Harley premieres this year, eventually. Are you awaiting it with bated breath or desirous of a spinoff? Sound off below.
