In a recent interview with CBS Mornings’s Gayle King given in promotion of the upcoming release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Carrey said that he was “sickened by the standing ovation” Smith received as he walked to the stage and slapped Rock.
“I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse, and it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we aren’t the cool club anymore,” the comedian added.

As King informed him that Chris Rock would not be pressing charges against Will Smith, Carrey surmised that the comedian just doesn’t want the “hassle” of the controversy to go on any longer and admitted that if it were him, he definitely would’ve filed a legal complaint against the newly-crowned Oscar winner.
“I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million, because that video is going to be there forever,” Carrey explained. “It’s going to be ubiquitous. That insult is going to last a very long time. ”
He went on, “If you want to yell from the audience and disapprove, or show disapproval, or say something on Twitter or whatever, you know… [but] you do not have the right to walk on stage and smack somebody in the face because they said words.”
At one point, King attempted to justify Smith’s actions against Rock, suggesting that the situation “escalated to that level”, prompting Carrey to immediately shut down this line of thinking, stating that the altercation “came out of nowhere because Will has something going on inside him that is frustrating.”

According to Carrey, the infamous incident “cast a pall over everybody’s shining moment,” especially considering how “a lot of people worked really hard to get to [The Oscars] and to have their moment in the sun.”
“It is no mean feat to go through all the stuff you have to go through when you’re nominated for an Oscar. It’s a gauntlet of devotion that you have to do,” the actor explained, going on to detail how difficult and exhausting the whole process is.
Carrey then concluded that the whole altercation was “just a selfish moment that cast a pall over the whole thing.”
The day after his shameful display, Smith took to social media to issue a statement wherein he condemned “violence in all of its forms” and publicly apologised to Rock, claiming that he was “out of line” and “embarrassed” for his actions.
“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive,” wrote Smith. “My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.”
Smith continued, “I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”
As King mentioned on CBS Mornings, Chris Rock has not filed charges against Will Smith yet. This information is backed by The Guardian senior reporter Lois Beckett, who shared a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department on social media.

“LAPD investigative entities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program,” shared Beckett. “The incident involved one individual slapping another. The individual involved has declined to file a police report.”
“If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report,” the statement reportedly concluded.
