Insider sources have claimed the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake has shifted from Aspyr Media to Saber Interactive.

Sources had previously told Bloomberg that Art Director Jason Minor and Design Director Brad Prince were laid off shortly after a demo of the game was shown to Lucasfilm and Sony. They also claimed studio heads told employees that development would be “paused” indefinitely. Some held the belief Saber Interactive — who had been brought on in May to assist — would take over development.
The Embracer Group — who acquired Aspyr in 2021 — announced several weeks later “One of the Group’s AAA projects has transitioned to another studio within the Group,” in order to meet its expected quality standards. While the holding company has many AAA projects in the works, the claims about the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake development woes only stoked speculation.

Now, Bloomberg’s sources have once again shed light. The sources, reportedly closely involved with the game, claimed that Aspy Media are no longer developing the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake.
Instead, the title is now being developed by one of Saber Interactive’s many Eastern European studios; namely Saber Belarus, Saber Russia, or Saber Sweden — though the latter is more Northern Europe than Eastern.
This is somewhat surprising, as the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine has been opposed by the western gaming industry along with the western entertainment industry as a whole. This may mean the Swedish studio has been selected, or Saber Interactive will omit which studio is working on the game in marketing.
Despite the Embracer Group stating they are “not expecting any material delays for the title based on this transition,” Bloomberg note how the game has had no release date announced to the public. Sources told Bloomberg the game will take at least another two years to complete.
In spite of this, some involved with the project reportedly said they felt the remake would be better thanks to the change of developer. Representatives of the Embracer Group “didn’t immediately have a comment” when Bloomberg reached out to them.
