Insomniac Games Provides More Details On The Upcoming Spider-Man: Miles Morales Game

Insomniac Games’ Brian Horton, the Creative Director for Spider-Man: Miles Morales has provided some more details about the upcoming game and clarified what players can expect from the game.

Confusion surrounding the game and what exactly it will be has swirled about the game after conflicting statements were issued by Executive Vice President of Europe Business Operations at PlayStation Simon Rutter and Horton.

In June Rutter described the game as an expansion. He stated, “I guess you could call it an expansion and an enhancement to the previous game.”

He elaborated, “There’s a substantial Miles Morales component – which is the expansion element – but also within the game as well there’s been major enhancements to the game and the game engine, obviously deploying some of the major PS5 technology and features.”

Hours after Rutter’s comments were published by The Telegraph, Insomniac described the game as a standalone game on Twitter.

Ten days later they would release a trailer promoting the game.

In the trailer, Horton would also declare that the game was a standalone game. He stated, “Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a standalone game.” He would add, “And it’s the next essential adventure in the Spider-Man universe.”

He reiterated, ““Insomniac’s loved this character for a long time. We introduced him in Marvel’s Spider-Man. And we knew we needed to tell a standalone story of Miles Morales becoming a hero.”

Horton then stated, “We wanted to make sure that when you played the game you, felt like you were playing a brand new Spider-Man.”

In a blog post that was published alongside the trailer, Horton wrote, “We know a lot of you want to know how big this game is. Our team at Insomniac has been working incredibly hard to bring you a fantastic Miles Morales adventure since we concluded development on Marvel’s Spider-Man.”

He then detailed that the game would be similar in scope to Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, “You’ll experience a full story arc with Miles, one that’s more akin to a game like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy in terms of overall scope.”

Horton then wrote, “Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is an important, heartfelt, emotional and essential experience to expanding the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe. And we hope it will be for you as well.”

Entertainment Weekly (EW) would confirm that the game’s scope will be like Lost Legacy and that it’s a “shorter spin-off.” EW’s Nick Romano writes, ” It’s a shorter spin-off, likened in scope to the Lost Legacy game in the Uncharted series.”

He elaborated, “This is a full arc for Miles Morales that started in Spider-Man. We really are completing this hero’s coming of age in our game. It is a complete story.”

However, he does note that the game will have more compact storytelling. Horton explained, “When we started crafting it we realized that, with a little bit more of a compact storytelling style, we could tell a very emotionally impactful story that would fit really well as an experience that would take Spider-Man 1 and [Miles Morales] and do justice to this character.”

As for Miles’ character, Horton explains he “is more so born out of family. What I think is really compelling about Miles as a character is he has friends that he could actually let into his world — his human world and his Spider world. He’s a little different in the way he approaches it.”
