Sarah Kate Ellis, president of LGBTQ watchdog GLAAD, has called on Hollywood to “create and write” more about the transgender community, claiming that it is “political pundits” who give transgender individuals a bad reputation.

In a recent interview with Variety, Ellis referred to what she perceives as transgenders being underrepresented in Hollywood, noting, “We have seen those watershed moments (for lesbian, gay and bisexual representation), whether it was Ellen DeGeneres coming out or Will & Grace.”

“What we don’t have yet is a watershed moment for the trans community,” she decried. “I see this opportunity as a chance to speak to the academy and all the creators in the room to say that we need that moment.”

Ellis encouraged, “We need you to create and write about trans people because there were over 500 anti-LGBTQ bills proposed this past year and most are against trans people and our trans youth,” before she went on to baselessly claim “political pundits” of spreading misinformation about the transgender community.

“But what’s taking up that space in the media right now are political pundits who are talking about trans people with misinformation and in negative ways,” the GLAAD president accused. “We need Hollywood to be the antidote to that.”

During her acceptance speech at the Television Governors Award on Monday night, Ellis doubled down on her stance, admitting the woke advocacy organisation’s goal is to influence audiences by including more LGBTQ characters in movies and television.

“What the world sees on TV directly influences how we treat each other and the decisions we make in our living rooms, schools, at work, and at the ballot box,” Ellis asserted. “The world urgently needs culture changing stories about transgender people.”

The GLAAD CEO further claimed, “Because more Americans say they have seen a ghost than know a trans person. When you don’t know people, it’s easy to demonize them.”

“Visibility creates understanding and opens doors, it’s life-saving,” Ellis added, going on to claim, “Our community has achieved so much and yet, we are still being villainized with cruel and harmful lies.”

A 2022 study from the UCLA School of Law’s Williams Institute — which, according to their website “conducts independent research on sexual orientation and gender identity law and public policy” — concluded that less than 1% of the population in the U.S. identify as transgender.

“Over 1.6 million adults (ages 18 and older) and youth (ages 13 to 17) identify as transgender in
the United States, or 0.6% of those ages 13 and older,” the study notes, further elaborating, “Among U.S. adults, 0.5% (about 1.3 million adults) identify as transgender. Among youth ages 13 to 17 in the U.S., 1.4% (about 300,000 youth) identify as transgender.”

Taking this information into account, the number of transgender individuals in films and television should amount to less than 1% for Hollywood productions to accurately represent the trans community — statistics GLAAD would likely dismiss, regardless of empirical evidence.

Ellis claimed that “political pundits” are villainising transgenders by spreading “cruel and harmful lies,” yet failing to provide any evidence to back up her unfounded claims. To this end, GLAAD has a history of turning a blind eye to truths that could potentially end up harming the narrative they perpetually try to push.

In September of 2018, 26-year-old transgender shooter Snochia Moseley opened fire at a Rite Aid distribution centre in Aberdeen, Maryland, killing three people and injuring another three before reportedly “shooting herself twice in the head.” GLAAD did not comment.

In May of 2019, 16-year-old transgender shooter Maya ‘Alec’ McKinney, alongside 18-year-old Devon Michael Erickson, opened fire at the STEM School Highlands Ranch, killing one student and injuring eight others. GLAAD did not comment.

In November of 2022, non-binary 23-year-old shooter Anderson Lee Aldrich killed five people and injured18 others at the Club Q in Colorado Springs, CO.

Surprisingly, GLAAD did address the shooting at the LGBTQ nightclub. Unsurprisingly, however, they made sure to omit that the shooter was a member of the LGBTQ community.

In March of 2023, GLAAD also turned a blind eye to the horrific shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville, where 28-year-old transgender shooter Audrey Hale shot and killed six people including 9-year-olds Hallie Scruggs, Evelyn Dieckhaus, and William Kinney, as well as Covenant School Head Katherine Koonce, substitute teacher Cynthia Peak, and custodian Mike Hill.

In November of 2023, for the anniversary of the Club Q shooting, GLAAD published an article remembering the victims of the tragic event. Once again, the woke advocacy group intentionally omitted that the shooter was non-binary, instead opting to put the blame on “extremists” making use of “fear and violence” to spread “anti-LGBTQ lies and disinformation.”

“We’ve seen anti-LGBTQ lies and disinformation spewing from the mouths of politicians, served up to millions on social media, and inciting violence everywhere from elementary schools and libraries, to places of worship, to school board meetings, to places of business,” Ellis said at the time.

She continued, “By and large, the American people support the LGBTQ community, but a small group of extremists are using fear and violence to spread their lies,” adding, “It’s past time for our government, media, and corporate leaders to change course and truly support LGBTQ people.”
