Lucasfilm Creative Art Manager Phil Szostak Attempts To Justify Baby Yoda Eating Frog Lady’s Eggs

Lucasfilm Creative Art Manager Phil Szostak attempted to justify Baby Yoda eating Frog Lady’s eggs in The Mandalorian Chapter 10: The Passenger.

Szostak took to Twitter where he reacted to the official Twitter account for The Mandalorian sharing a poster of Frog Lady.

Szostak quote tweeted the poster writing, “For the record, Chapter 10 of The Mandalorian  makes it clear that the Frog Lady’s eggs are unfertilized, like the chicken eggs many of us enjoy.”

“But obviously, chickens aren’t sentient beings and the Child eating the eggs is intentionally disturbing, for comedic effect,” he added.

In a subsequent tweet, Szostak wrote, “Fans of horror know that disturbing things make some of us laugh and some of us squirm, or both. Your mileage may vary.”

However, this explanation did not satisfy many fans.

Twitter user OGStarwarsAB responded, “Yet, the mom was passionate and cared about those eggs..her future generation and was in dire need to get them to her mate. Thus saying they mean something, they are real to her and not just a product to carry around.”

She added, ” We are to also believe that the Child is a compassionate being whom used the force to save others (healing) and can understand circumstances around it. Thus leading us to believe it understood what those eggs/offspring mean to the mother…whom is racing against the clock to carry on her lineage. Then the child ate a fertilized egg (spider).”

Twitter user StevenWayneArt also stated, “Why would you take a beloved character and have them do something intentionally disturbing? The mother was trying to preserve her family line and the Child was the one destroying it: you literally made him the villain in this episode. Who thought that was a good idea?”

OceanSelene wrote, “for the record, the frog lady was very adamant about the fact that her eggs were important to her, and that it was her last and only chance to have kids, so it’s actually closer to f***ing up someone’s IVF which would be incredibly upsetting for a wannabe mom. it’s not funny.”

Jay_2SO wrote, “Them being unfertilized like a chicken egg makes sense, but there was also a point made that those were her last eggs ever and she was afraid to lose any of them. It seems like The Child ate like half of them, so that was jarring for sure.”

Flypaper_Brain added, “I’m a mom. It’s not funny at all to hear mama frog lady go into great detail about how important & beloved her eggs are to her & have to watch them get eaten on 3 separate occasions for shits & giggles. Can’t just *one* mom get to survive AND keep her kids?”

Azulgris27 stated, “Her entire species facing extinction but it’s suppose to be cute? I’ll be honest i found it completely disturbing and not at all cute.”

Wonderartsy added their thoughts writing, “Only if you see her as equal to an actual frog, not as a sentient humanoid being. It would be like a toddler eating IVF eggs that failed to be fertilized. Just sucking them down out of a test tube. Intentionally disturbing, fine. But comedic effect? Nope.”

“And even that isn’t as bad, because the child ate them BEFORE they had a chance at life. You made it clear with the “joke” that Mando sees Frog Lady as a lesser form of life, because he didn’t try much to stop the child from eating them. He cpuld have secured them better,” they added.

Byronicoconmoto also responded, “I’m afraid for many (judging by these replies) the joke didn’t land well at all. I must say for me it truly read as if the joke was at the expense of the pain of the poor frog lady and her struggles (which are well underlined during the ep.) and it hit a bit too close to home.”

They added, “It made, me feel uncomfortable and it reminded me of the many times women and their struggles are laughed at. The last scene really left me speechless, it was just so cruel. I do understand not everyone will feel that way and that The Child is young and unruly but it could have eaten anything else.”

What do you make of Szostak’s explanation? Do you buy it? What did you make of the fact that Baby Yoda ate the eggs of Frog Lady?
