The adapatation was announced in Weekly Shonen Magazine’s 24th issue of 2022 in the form a color spread featured in front of the series’ 61st chapter.

Depicting all four eponymous Knights of the Apocalypse facing off against the original series’ Seven Deadly Sins, the special announcement declared (via machine translation provided by Google Translate) that a “decision has been made to produce a TV animation of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse!”

Following this reveal, the official Four Knights of the Apocalypse Twitter account shared the anime’s first key visual, wherein Percival can be seen standing back to back with Meliodas.

The account also shared a message from Suzuki, who shared his excitement at the fact that “on the 10th anniversary of ‘The Seven Deadly Sins,’ an anime adaptation of ‘The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse’ has been announced!”

“I’m very happy about it, and I’m very enthusiastic about writing more!” exclaimed the mangaka. “We can’t wait to see the chemistry between the characters of the deadly sins 16 years later and the young protagonists of the Apocalypse! Please look forward to both the manga and the anime!”

Taking place 16 years after the events of The Seven Deadly Sins, The Four Knights of the Apocalypse finds the former group long disbanded and Arthur Pendragon, the self-declared King of Chaos, ruling over Camelot.

As the series opens, Arthur finds his rule threatened by a prophecy which warns that four individuals – the eponymous Four Knights of the Apocalypse – will soon bring him to ruin.

Their membership composed of the typical pillars of Starvation (or Famine), Plague (or Pestilence), War, and Death, the four are also foretold to destroy the entire world through the causing of four unspecified “calamities”.

Given only a vague hint as to the four Knights’ appearances – “An enigmatic shapeshifter of a boy,  a child with wing-like green hair,  a prince with eyes of holiness and evil, and a woman with golden magic” – Arthur proceeds to order his Holy Knights to seek out and destroy the threats before they can truly pose any danger to his rule.

With all four prophesized knights finally united in the series’ aforementioned 61st chapter, the group’s full roster has been revealed to be composed of:

Percival

The Knight of Death and the series’ main protagonist, Percival has the ability to wield the rare and overpowered ‘Hope Magic’, a power which taps into his comrades’ belief in him to increase his power and allow him to create golems with various abilities.

The “child with winged like hair” has also been seen to wield the rare power of Death, which when he feels lonely and hopeless, grants him the power to suck the life force out of whomever he touches.

Lancelot

The Knight of War and a former Holy Knight of Liones, Lancelot was assigned by King Melodias to find the Four Knights of the Apocalypse.

Disguising himself as a talking pink-white fox named Sin to avoid detection by the Knights of Camelot, the half-fairy son of Ban and Elaine is eventually revealed to be the “enigmatic shapeshifter of a boy” foretold in the prophecy.

Upon his return from his journey with his master Jericho, Lanceolt has been referred to as the Prince of the Lake.

Based on what Guinever said in Chapter 59, it’s likely we’ll get to what this means later in the series.

Tristan

The son of King Meliodas and Queen Elizabeth, Tristan fills the role of the group’s resident Knight of Pestilence.

Possessing both the powers of both the Demon and Goddess races, Tristan has aspired to become a holy knight ever since learning of the Seven Deadly Sins on his tenth birthday.

Tristan has the ability to use both demon and goddess powers simultaneously.  In Chapter 61, Pellagarde confirmed that Tristan was “the prince with eyes of holiness and evil.” portion of the prophecy.

The “prince with eyes of holiness and evil” is currently set to star in a two-part movie titled The Seven Deadly Sins: Grudge of Edinburgh.

Featuring an original story by Suzuki, both movies will be streamed by Netflix, with the first part set to release sometime in 2022.

Gawain

A blood relative of the enemy King Arthur and possessing the power to use Golden Magic, the aptly named Master of the Sun known as Gawain is the prophesied Knight of Famine.

Staying true to the Arthurian lore, Gawain is a complete romantic, and even in the group’s first encounter with her attempts to swoon Isolde.

While Gawain is a gender-swapped version of her Arthurian counterpart, as of yet, it’s unknown whether she’s completely a woman or if there’s a ‘Ranma 1/2’ gender-switching situation going on.
