Adapted from the dark fantasy adventure manga of the same name by Akihito Tsukushi, the second season of Made in Abyss -subtitled The Golden City of the Scorching Sun (Retsuhi no Kogane no Sato) – will adapt the series’ sixth major storyline, the Ilblu Arc.
Its new trailer, released on the series’ official website on May 5th and titled “Riko’s Corps Side”, unveils what Made in Abyss fans have been waiting for since said arc wrapped up in the manga, starting with our heroic trio of Reg, Rico, and Nanachi entering the village of desire, Ilblu.
Nanachi is then seen walking in Ilblu alongside the Narehate puppet Majikaja, or Kaja for short, as voiced by Hiroki Goto (Michitaka, Log Horizon).
Here, Kaja reveals to Nanachi that one of the Three Sages Belaf, appears to be in possession of Mitty, despite the her being mercy killed by Reg in the first season.
Then scene then switches to Reg’s first encounter with the fan-favorite Narehate, Princess Faputa.
Upon entering her layer alone, Reg is initially approached aggressively by Faputa, as portrayed Misaki Kuno (Harumi Ayasato, Ace Attorney) who even greets him by tackling him down to the ground.
However, after realizing who he is, her demeanor changes, switching from angry and defensive to adorable, cuddly, and sweet.
We next switch to a moment much later in the arc where Riko rides Speed Form Kaja in an attempt to lure the creature known as the Fuzosheppunto into the center of Ilblu.
The new trailer then moves to introduce the Narehate Moogie, as voiced by Kimiko Saito (Medusa Megid, Kamen Rider Saber).
Moogie is a friendly restaurant worker in Ilblu that assists Riko with the local language and helps her find Nanachi and Reg after they’re split up within the village’s walls.
We’re also introduced to the adorable Narehate Maaa, voiced by Kana Ichinose (Yuzuriha Ogawa, Dr. Stone):
And shown Riko, Meinya and Maa eating at Moogie’s restaurant.

The trailer then presents a shot of Belaf, voiced by Mitsuki Saiga (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann), lifting their tail to reveal Nanachi asleep next to Mitty.
While this shot may seem insignificant, manga readers know what Nanachi had to sacrifice in order for this to even be possible, not to mention how significant of a role Mitty plays in this arc.
A bright light transitions us to Riko holding hands with Maa as they walk through the village.
Notice how there is an eerie smoke surrounding them, bathing the two in a dreamy effect.
This hints at the possibility that this scene could be taken from when Maa and Riko head towards Vueko.

The light shines up to Faputa’s ‘Big Daddy’-esque guardian, Gaburoon, whose voice is provided by Ryota Takeuchi (Jack, Ultraman ONA).
Given Gaburoon’s appearance at this point in the trailer, this could be when Reg learns the truth about Faputa.
Manga readers know what happens to Gaburoon, and it isn’t going back to Bioshock’s Rapture. Don’t worry anime-onlys – we won’t spoil it for you.
The eerily heavenly beam then transitions from Gaburoon to a cave, wherein Faputa is illuminated by its light.
Up until this point in the PV, the light has been whimsical effect, but whereas both Nanachi and Riko are escaping the pain of grief, Faputa is finding herself more perceptive to the light’s true nature.
Based on the fact the Reg is not with her in this scene, Faputa must have found out that thanks to Reg’s amnesia, he has forgotten her.
After a close-up of Faputa’s shocked face, the trailer transitions to Prushka’s spirit slowly materializing behind Riko in corporeal form – most likely during the fight against the Fuzosheppu when Riko is struggling to think of a way to save everyone.
Riko then sees an image of Prushka as she whispers to Riko to blow her White Whistle.
After the screen goes black and shows the season’s title card, the trailer concludes with a shot of Riko holding Prushka, her aforementioned White Whistle, and readies herself to play it.
Also revealed in the trailer was the season’s opening theme song, which as confirmed by the Made in Abyss official website will be the song Katachi by Riko Azuna ( Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu – Memory Snow, Kumo Desu ga, Nani ka?, and Kanata no Astra)
The official website also confirmed that pop rock band MYTH & ROID (Made in Abyss Movie 3: Fukaki Tamashii no Reimei, Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu, Overlord I-III) would provide the series’ ending theme, Endless Embrace.
As announced in the trailer, Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun is set to premiere sometime this July.
